From the mosaics of Ravenna, Italy to the New York subway to your bathroom—tiles can be found across the globe. This should come as no surprise if you’re familiar with tile’s many benefits. At Floor Coverings International Metro East, we carry hundreds of options for this durable, versatile, and beautiful flooring material. Here are a few tips for choosing the right tile style for your bathroom.
Technically, a tile can be made from anything, from stone to carpet to vinyl (which is why it’s often called luxury vinyl tile), but most tile on the market today falls within a few categories:
- Ceramic/porcelain: the workhorses of the tile world, these tiles are strong, resistant to staining, and beautiful. They come in any conceivable color or design. They are by far the most common tile material you will find in Belleville homes.
- Glass: another great option. Glass is generally used for mosaic backsplashes and wall accents. Due to its slick surface, you want to make sure that any glass tile you lay on the ground has a rough texture.
- Natural Stone: made from minerals such as slate, marble, and limestone, these tiles are gorgeous but high-maintenance. Many require special chemical treatments to protect them from the “hardness” found in water.
Colors and Variety
After you’ve decided on a material or mixture of materials, it’s time to choose colors and sizing. A general rule of thumb is to choose no more than two or three different tiles for one space—any more and it looks busy. Lighter, larger tiles will make a space seem more open and large. Smaller, darker tiles will make a room feel cozier.
