When you’re renovating your home or designing a new home, cork may not be too high up on your flooring wish list, but at Floor Coverings International® of Belleville we love cork floors! We think they’re a wonderful choice for all types of homes and businesses.
Here are six reasons you shouldn’t dismiss cork flooring:
1. It’s Eco-Friendly
Cork is a bit mysterious. It’s used for many things, but not a lot of people know where it originates. You may be surprised to learn that cork actually comes from trees!
According to CorkLink, cork is just a name for the bark from an oak tree – the Cork Oak. They’re native to parts of Africa and Europe. The organization says that cork is harvested by stripping the bark from the tree. And the best part is that “this does not harm the tree at all.” The bark then starts growing back “and nine years later it can be harvested again.” This makes it incredibly sustainable!
2. It’s Unique
A great number of homes homes have hardwood, carpet, or tile. Have you ever been in a home and seen a cork floor? Cork is not most people’s go-to when it comes to building a home or renovating, which makes it a natural choice for anyone who likes to take the road less traveled and stand out from the crowd.
3. It’s Safe
Cork floors can be fire- and water-resistant. Cork is also naturally anti-microbial, meaning it “repels insects, bacteria, vermin, microbes, and other germs that could be residing on a busy floor’s surface,” according to CDC Distributors. That also means that cork is a terrible home for mold, mildew, and termites, which makes it a great choice for your home.
4. It’s Durable
Cork floors can last upwards of 40 years and are versatile. You can find them in libraries, banks, courthouses, schools and various other establishments. Globus Cork says the flooring is a very strong choice because “the softness and give of the floor causes less of a grinding action to occur with normal foot traffic than on harder surfaces such as hardwood floors” and that cork flooring “has a very long life and can be repaired if damaged,” opposed to just being completely replaced.
5. It’s Beautiful
Cork isn’t just that weird bulletin board material, the pesky plug that’s difficult to get out of your wine bottle, or the top on those fancy jars of bath salts. It may look better than you’d expect. It can be shiny, smooth, and come in many different styles or colors. When done correctly, it doesn’t look cheap. It can also emulate tile and hardwood if you want the look of different flooring with all the benefits of cork!
6. It Feels Good
Cork isn’t like tile or hardwood in a big way – it’s not rigid. GetWithGreen.com points out that cork has give. The site says that cork will “bounce back as you move across the floor” and that it’s a “wonderful alternative to ceramic tile if you have bad knees, joints, back, etc.” To make it even more appealing, cork doesn’t get as cold as tile or wood for those of us who like to walk around barefoot.
So now that you know how incredible cork actually is, we hope you’ll consider it as one of your beautiful and eco-friendly flooring options at your Floor Coverings International in Belleville. We offer free in-home estimates on our services so you get the best service and product possible.
